A white label platform for prop trading firms is a ready-made stack, usually a trading platform such as MetaTrader 5 plus a challenge engine, trader dashboard, CRM and payout tools, run under the prop firm’s own brand. To start a prop firm on MT5, first confirm who holds the MT5 licence and that it permits prop accounts, then set rules, payments, KYC and payouts.
What is a white label prop firm platform?
A white label prop firm platform is a provider’s technology that you run under your own brand to sell trading evaluations, manage challenge and funded accounts, and pay traders. It typically combines a trading platform, a challenge and rule engine, a trader dashboard, a CRM with KYC and payments, and payout and affiliate tools. You add the brand, the rules, the marketing and the money.
The phrase “white label” is used loosely in prop. It may mean a branded MT5 environment, a branded cTrader or Match-Trader server, or only a branded dashboard sitting on someone else’s platform account. Before comparing offers, ask each provider exactly which layer is branded and which licence your traders’ accounts sit under. For the component-by-component view, see our prop trading technology page.
Why is MT5 access the first decision for a prop firm?
MT5 access is the first decision because a prop firm on MetaTrader 5 depends on a licence holder’s agreement with MetaQuotes, and in February 2024 that dependency cut several firms off within days. Trade press reported that brokers hosting prop firms on their MT5 servers, including on demo environments, ended those services, with US clients named as the main concern. MetaQuotes did not publish a statement.
The situation eased in 2025. Finance Magnates reported firms returning to MT5 through their own “main label” licences or broker partners, and in August 2025 reported FTMO relaunching in the US on MT5 with OANDA. The practical lesson for a new firm has not changed: get written confirmation from whoever holds the MT5 licence that prop accounts are permitted for your client base, and know what happens if that changes.
“We’re unfortunately in breach of our grey label license ability to offer this for prop firms, so we’re forced to immediately shut down Funding Pips as a client and their server on our Demo environment.”
What are the ways to start a prop firm, and how do they compare?
There are five realistic ways to start a prop firm: through a broker partner that permits prop on its MT5 server, on an MT5 grey label with that permission, with your own MT5 licence, on another platform with a prop CRM, or by building in-house. They differ mainly in launch time, control and how exposed you are to someone else’s decision.
An MT5 grey label, in this context, is a brokerage set up inside another company’s licensed MetaTrader 5 server: you get your own client groups and your brand on the WebTrader, mobile apps, CRM and client portal, while the MT5 server licence stays with the provider. For prop that only works if the provider’s licence explicitly allows evaluation accounts. Be wary of shortcuts: some firms formed offshore companies to regain MT5 access, but a Saint Lucia company, for example, is a company and not a forex licence, as our Saint Lucia guide explains.
| Route | Speed | Control | Main dependency | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Broker partner with MT5 | Fast | Low to medium | Broker’s licence terms and appetite for prop | Founders testing demand |
| MT5 grey label permitting prop | Fast | Medium: your groups and brand | Provider’s licence holder and its MetaQuotes agreement | Brands that want MT5 without their own licence |
| Own MT5 licence | Slow: company, licence route, MetaQuotes approval (tier-based monthly fee) | High | Your own compliance and operations | Funded firms planning long term |
| Other platform with a prop CRM | Fast | Medium | Platform vendor’s terms | Firms wanting a second platform or no MT5 dependency |
| In-house build | Slow: Track360 estimates 9 to 18 months | Full | Your engineering team | Large firms with specific needs |
Which prop firm business model should you choose?
Choose between evaluation-based funding, instant funding or a hybrid, based on how much risk you can carry and how clearly you can explain the rules. Spotware’s 2026 guide describes the same three dominant models. Evaluation models sell a challenge that traders must pass under rules before reaching a funded account. Instant funding gives traders an account immediately for a fee, usually with smaller balances and tighter rules. Hybrids offer both, sometimes with subscriptions or scaling.
Your choice changes the technology. Evaluation models need multi-phase account creation and a precise rule engine; instant funding needs stronger real-time risk controls from day one; subscriptions need recurring billing and account suspension logic. Decide the model before you compare providers.
Evaluation-based
One or two challenge phases, then a funded account. Revenue mainly from evaluation fees; clarity of rules drives refunds and reputation.
Instant funding
Account available on payment, with tighter drawdowns and smaller sizes. Higher risk per trader, simpler funnel.
Hybrid and subscription
Mix of both, sometimes with monthly fees or scaling plans. More flexible, more complex to explain and to build.
Do you need a licence to start a prop firm?
It depends on your jurisdiction, where your traders are and what actually happens to their orders; there is no general exemption for prop firms. Some vendors tell founders that prop firms do not need licences. We do not repeat that. A firm selling purely simulated evaluations is in a different position from one that routes funded traders’ orders to live markets, holds client money or markets leverage to the public, and consumer, payments and advertising law can apply in either case.
Regulators have looked at the sector. In August 2023 the US CFTC filed a complaint against Traders Global Group (My Forex Funds) alleging, among other things, that the firm rather than a third-party liquidity provider was the counterparty to substantially all customer trades. These were allegations; in May 2025 the court dismissed the case with prejudice. The episode still pushed the industry to describe accounts as simulated and to be precise about execution; our A-book, B-book and hybrid guide explains the execution models involved. Separately, your platform route may require a licensed entity even if your home regulator does not. Our licence jurisdictions overview and MT5 licence guide explain the options. This is not legal advice.
What does the provider run and what do you run?
The provider runs the technology and the infrastructure; you run the business, the rules, the money and the relationship with traders. That split sounds obvious until a payout dispute or a chargeback arrives and nobody has agreed whose job it is. Put it in the contract.
| Area | Provider (for example FXUP) | Prop firm |
|---|---|---|
| Trading platform access | Configures accounts and groups; confirms licence permissions | Chooses route; signs platform agreement |
| Challenge rules | Implements and enforces rules exactly as defined | Writes and publishes the rulebook |
| Trader dashboard and front ends | Builds and brands | Supplies brand, texts, translations |
| Payments and refunds | Integrates PSPs | Contracts PSPs; owns refund and chargeback policy |
| KYC before payout | Integrates KYC provider and workflow | Approves or rejects; owns AML policy |
| Payout decisions | Calculates and records | Approves, pays and handles disputes |
| Fraud review | Flags patterns with evidence | Decides and communicates outcomes |
| Affiliates and marketing | Tracks referrals and commissions | Recruits, pays and supervises affiliates |
What drives the cost of starting a prop firm?
The cost of starting a prop firm is driven less by the trading platform than by everything around it: the platform route you choose, payment processing, marketing and affiliate commissions, legal work in your target markets, and the reserve you hold for funded-trader payouts. Founders who budget only for the technology are usually surprised by the rest within the first few months.
Vendors that publish figures describe different scopes, and the same headline can mean a branded dashboard on someone else’s account or a full MT5 environment with CRM and payouts. We do not publish figures on this page because they move with those choices. Message us on WhatsApp with your model, target countries and preferred route, and we will send current figures for your set-up. If you already hold a provider quote, send it too and we will show you what it covers.
| Cost area | What drives it | Often missed |
|---|---|---|
| Platform route | Own MT5 licence (tier-based monthly fee from MetaQuotes), broker partner or grey label | Written permission for prop accounts; what happens if it is withdrawn |
| Technology set-up | Rule engine, dashboard, CRM, payouts, front ends; reuse vs new build | Custom rules, translations, extra test environments |
| Running technology | Platform, hosting, data feeds, support | Charges per account, per challenge or per payout |
| Payments | High-risk merchant processing, number of PSPs and methods | Chargebacks, rolling reserves, refunds |
| Marketing and affiliates | Commission model, paid acquisition, content | Affiliate fraud and claw-back rules |
| Legal and compliance | Company jurisdiction, target markets, terms, advertising review | Advice in each marketing country, not only at home |
| Payout reserve | Number of funded traders and payout frequency | Clusters of payouts after a good market month |
How should you compare prop firm platform quotes?
Compare prop firm platform quotes by sending every provider the same written brief and asking for a line-by-line answer, not a package name. List your business model, programmes and account sizes, target countries, payment methods and preferred platform route. The way a provider answers tells you whether they have understood your rulebook.
Then check each quote against the same questions. The differences usually sit in what is left out rather than in the totals: the platform licence or broker arrangement, per-account charges, payment integrations, translations and the cost of changing a rule after launch.
- Which licence do traders’ accounts sit under, and is prop use confirmed in writing?
- Is the price one-off, recurring or both, and does any part scale with accounts, challenges or payouts?
- Are the rule engine, dashboard, CRM, payouts and front ends all included, or sold as modules?
- Which payment and KYC integrations are in scope, and which do you contract yourself?
- Who owns trader data and rule configuration, and how is it exported if you leave?
- How are new programmes and rule changes handled after launch?
- What happens to open challenges if the platform route changes?
How do you start a prop firm on MT5, step by step?
Start with the platform route and the rulebook, because everything else depends on them. The order below is the one we use with clients.
- Choose the model and marketsEvaluation, instant or hybrid; which countries you will accept; whether US traders are in scope.
- Get legal adviceConfirm what your model requires in your company’s jurisdiction and your main markets, including consumer and advertising rules.
- Secure platform access in writingOwn MT5 licence, broker partner or grey label: get written confirmation that prop accounts are permitted.
- Write the rulebookTargets, daily and maximum loss with exact definitions, reset time and time zone, minimum days, consistency and payout rules.
- Set up payments and KYCContract PSPs that accept your markets; decide when KYC is required (before payout at the latest).
- Build and brandDashboard, front ends, CRM, rule engine and payout workflow configured and connected to MT5.
- Shadow testRun test accounts through real sessions and compare the engine’s numbers with manual calculations, especially at daily resets.
- Launch smallOpen to a limited audience, review every breach and payout for a few weeks, then scale marketing.
Can a prop firm accept US traders on MT5?
It depends on your platform route and US legal advice; US clients were the main reason given for the 2024 MT5 terminations. Finance Magnates reported on 19 February 2024 that “The primary concern looks to be active US clients onboard by prop trading platforms.” TradeInformer wrote in May 2025 that “you cannot access the US market with MetaTrader”, while Finance Magnates reported in August 2025 that FTMO had relaunched in the US on MT5 with OANDA.
These reports point in different directions, which is the honest state of the market. If US traders matter to your business, make it a written question to your licence holder and a US lawyer before launch, and design the CRM so you can block or segment US residents at registration.
What happens if your platform provider cuts access?
If your platform provider cuts access, your traders cannot trade until you move them, so plan the exit before you launch. The firms that recovered fastest in 2024 already had their rules, trader records and payouts outside the platform and could reconnect them elsewhere.
- Keep the rulebook, account states and payout history in your own CRM, not only on the platform.
- Know which second platform you would use and what integrating it involves.
- Have terms that explain what happens to open challenges if the platform changes.
- Prepare a client message and a timeline you can publish within hours.
- Avoid single points of dependency where you can: one licence holder, one PSP, one liquidity source.
How does FXUP set up a prop trading firm?
We set up the technology around MetaTrader 5: account provisioning and rule enforcement through the MT5 Manager API, a trader dashboard, risk and fraud monitoring, payout workflows and a broker CRM for KYC, payments and affiliates (we have our own CRM and also work with partner CRMs, and we propose whichever fits your model), with your brand on the branded WebTrader and mobile apps. If you prefer to start on a shared server, we look at an MT5 grey label only where the licence holder confirms prop use in writing.
FXUP is a technology provider and consulting firm; we are not a prop firm, a broker or a law firm, and FXUP is not affiliated with MetaQuotes. If you choose your own MT5 licence, we act as consultants on that application: we handle MetaQuotes’ requirements and the paperwork for you, for a fee quoted with the project. Every project begins with your rulebook and a written scope that lists what is standard, what is built for you and what you will need from third parties. You can try the trading front end on the WebTrader demo and the mobile app demo.
